Artist Bio

Gautam Bansal is a Bengaluru-based charcoal artist whose practice has evolved through a longstanding engagement with the medium, developing into a focused professional practice in recent years. His work explores the expressive possibilities of charcoal through recognisable forms, movement, atmosphere and transformation. His work has been presented across exhibitions and art platforms in India and is part of private collections in India and abroad. His practice has also received recognition through publications, media features and curated presentations.Gautam has participated in over thirty-eight exhibitions and continues to develop his practice through sustained exploration of charcoal, form and movement. Human figures, animals and elements of nature recur throughout his work, not as fixed subjects but as starting points for exploring gesture, presence, force and the changing nature of form. His practice moves between observation and expressive mark-making, allowing areas of definition to coexist with softer, more open passages.He has presented solo exhibitions at Sublime Galleria, UB City, Bengaluru, and JW Marriott Bengaluru Prestige Golfshire Resort & Spa, Devanahalli. Alongside his studio practice, he conducts charcoal workshops in schools and educational settings, and serves as a Visiting Art Professor at NMIMS for B.Sc. Economics students.

Artist Statement

My practice with charcoal has evolved around a continuing curiosity about form, movement and transformation.I am drawn to recognisable forms—human figures, animals and elements of nature—not simply to depict them, but to explore what happens to form through the act of drawing. I begin with observation, paying attention to structure, anatomy, gesture and movement, and then allow the charcoal to move beyond literal representation.A dancer, a horse, an animal or a natural form can become an opportunity to explore rhythm, force, presence and the changing relationship between the defined and the undefined. I often allow parts of a form to remain clearly observed while other areas soften, merge or dissolve into the surrounding space. This creates a tension between what is immediately recognisable and what remains open to interpretation.Charcoal is central to this exploration because of its raw and responsive nature. I work with deep tonal contrasts, directional marks, smudging, erasure and exposed areas of the surface to build both form and atmosphere. The marks themselves become part of the movement, allowing the medium to participate in the transformation of the image rather than simply describe it.Although my subjects vary, I see continuity in the way I approach them. I am interested in the point where observation gives way to gesture, where a solid form begins to loosen, and where movement and stillness can exist within the same image.My work continues to explore the space between representation and abstraction, while retaining the physical presence of the forms that initiate each drawing. I want the viewer to recognise the subject, but also to encounter something beyond its literal appearance—through movement, mark, atmosphere and the possibilities of charcoal itself.
